Amiya Nimai Dhara

Hails from rural Bengal, and looks towards his roots for subject matter as well as technique. Amiyo is predominantly a sculptor who also paints. He has attended traditional craft workshops of dokra (metal casting) and terracotta. He aims to bridge the gap between traditional technique and contemporary art. His subjects are gathered from his roots, the surrounding nature and its myriad colours and forms. He is also deeply influenced by the writings of the Nobel Laureate Poet, Rabindranath Tagore.
Amiyo Nimai is a recipient of the Lalit Kala Akademi Scholarship, New Delhi in 2001 – 02, He has also been awarded by the West Bengal State Akademi of Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Arts, Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata in 2001. Among the many workshops Amiyo Nimai has attended some are ; He has executed a Concrete (cement) Sculpture at ‘UDITA’ Complex built by Bengal Ambuja, Kolkata – 1999 / Sculpture camp on stone carving (marble) organized by Ministry of Culture,Govt. of India at Kola Gram (NZCC) Chandigarh,2006 / Participated in one month  National stone carving sculpture camp of Shilparamam Madhapur, Hyderabed.2012.
Some  exhibitions he has participated in are   Group exhibition at Akriti Art Gallery, Kolkata, 2007 / Red Earth Gallery (Agallery), Vadodara, 2007 / “To opt is to commit” Indian young artist exhibition at Cairo,Egypt;organized by Lalit Kala Academi New Delhi 2008 / “Narrative movements“ group exhibition at gallery with difference,Kolkata, May 2009 / Group exhibition at “Made in Gallery”, Pondicherry, July, 2009 / “Narrative movement” Group Exhibition at “Made in Gallery”, Pondicherry, Oct, 2009 .
Amiyo Nimai lives and works in Santiniketan, West Bengal.
