Amritah Sen

Born in July 4, 1973, Amrita did her B.F.A. (1997) and M.F.A. (1999) from Kala Bhavana, Visva Bharati University, Santiniketan, India. According to Amritah certain things cannot be told verbally, but thankfully there are other ways to represent them. For the artist there are various reasons why they cannot be expressed flatly. Reason one is, they are secrets. Secondly, they all seem to be highly insignificant moments in comparison to bigger issues of life. All the sorrow, grief and joy that have been portrayed in Amritah’s works were actually unimportant things picked up from the past. For her it is like mind-mapping. The mind travelling far and wide, making extensive trips inside and finding out details, moments and feelings that are long forgotten are the places where Amritah delves for her creative oeuvre.
Amritah received National Scholarship in the field of visual art from 1996 to 1998. She has had several solo shows in Kolkata; to name a few - “hide and seek”, (Project 88, Mumbai, 2008) / “small things”, (Anant Art Gallery, New Delhi, 2010) / “do you still happen?”, (Gandhara Art Gallery, Kolkata, 2010) / “Being Black”, (Ganges Art Gallery, Kolkata, 2013). Notable among her group shows are - Works on Paper” Organised by Victoria Knox, Switzerland. Curated by Alka Pandey and Gallery Akar Prakar. India Habitat Centre, New Delhi, 2011 / “Group show” Kulterwerk, Aachen, curated by ARTCO Gallery, Germany, 2012 / “Firm ground beneath her”, Gallery Veda, Chennai, 2012 / “Tagore lost and found”, curated by Bina Sarkar Ellias at Art Bull, New Delhi, 2013.
