Manjari Chakravarti

Born in 1963 in Calcutta, India, came to study at the Fine arts Institute in the small University town of Santiniketan and afterwards settled and worked from there.

Manjari works with personal and social histories. She attempts to retell stories of personal tragedies and triumphs big and small. Text fascinates her. She works with the image and the written word.  Text is a very important tool for her and roughly half her work is written records. Her works talk sexual freedom and choices, in a country where sex is a hush hush issue and women can suffer a lifetime of deprivation and pain since one does not talk about it. Her work draws from indigenous folk art sources as well as contemporary kitsch. She is also currently working on a graphic novel titled "the Vanishing Wives'.

Manjari has had six solo shows to her credit, in Calcutta, Delhi and France. She has participated in many curated shows, showing at the Galerie Neumeister, Munich and Indian Embassy, Berlin in June 2011; International Art Summit on Women’s Issues, Kathmandu 2009; India Art Summit 2011; Emerging India-Royal College of Art, London. 2006- Khoj International Artists’ Workshop.
Manjari lives and works in Santiniketan, India.
