Jyoti Bhatt

Born in 1934 in Gujarat, Jyoti Bhatt studied Painting at M. S. University (1950 -1959); Academia Di Belle Arti, Naples under Govt. Scholarship, (61-62), Fresco at Vanasthali Vidyapith (1953), Printmaking, Pratt Institute New York under Fulbright and JDR III rd Grants. (1964-66). Holography ,England (1985). Jyoti bhai, as Jyoti Bhatt is fondly called, began his artistic career as a painter and a printmaker in the 1950s. He also taught at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Baroda.
Since the 1970s Jyoti Bhatt has concentrated on documenting living art in rural homes that have been rapidly disappearing because of modern, consumerist lifestyles. The main idea behind this is that somebody has to document these lifestyles before they get lost forever. He has photographed everything, from intricately carved doors to floors, pots, pans, walls, houses that is part of our folk art in rural India. His camera replaced his sketchbook. His best known work is the documentation of the rangoli tradition in Gujarat and Maharashtra. Bhatt doesn’t indulge in technical gimmicks; his photographs are simple, just the aim-and-shoot kind. He has always believed in content over form. His work has brought into spotlight those umpteen tribal artists who were deprived of any recognition or reward.
He has won a number of prestigious awards which include, Two National Awards and The President’s Gold Plaque (1956); Gold Medal at International Print Biennale, Italy; Grand-Prix, UNESCO Photo Contest, Japan; a Top Prize at ‘FOTOKINA’, West Germany (1978), Nikon International Photo Contest and DAVP, India, and also for Print making at Gujarat State Art Exhibition 1966 and for 25th Anniversary of Independence Postal Stamp Design (1972).
