Rakesh R Rana

Born in Vadodara Gujarat, Rakesh did his BVA in Sculpture and his Post Diploma in Sculpture, Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S. University.
His work reflects the unification of tradition and modernity. He believes that our customs and values served as our identity.
In his work Rakesh uses modern tools and objects, like parts of machines, electric circuits etc. He composes these objects with metals and unifies them to give the form of a complete dokra sculpture. Rakesh feels that dokra gives a very important value to his concept as it is the earliest method of metal casting known to human kind. The word Dokra itself means the ‘oldest’ and is practiced by many of the tribal population of India. In his work Rakesh uses these traditional techniques alongside a contemporary sensibility.
Rakesh has been a part of various exhibitions including A/P2 Tangibles 3 a Group Show, Priyasri Art Gallery Mumbai, 2011 / Tentacles a Group Show, Jehangir Art Gellery, Mumbai, 2011 / Baroda big show, Faculty of Fine Arts M.S.U., Baroda, 2012 / Portfolio Group Show, Priyasri Art Gallery, Mumbai, 2012 / Shadaj Group Show, Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai, 2012.
He has also done several metal casting workshops. His works can be found in the collection of Vishala Museum, Ahemdabad, Priyasri Art Gallery, Baroda, and Akbar Padamsee’s personal collection.
Rakesh lives and works in Vadodara, Gujarat.
