Birendra Pani

Born 1969 in Bhadrak, Odisha; Pani did his MFA in 1999 from Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S. University, Baroda and his BFA from Kala Bhavan, Viswa Bharati University, Santiniketan. Pani experiments through various medium like drawing, painting, sculpture, print making, serigraphy, photography and mix-media video installation works. He has developed a distinct drawing quality and individual style through years of artistic engagement for exploration of a new visual language. Re-using local tradition -popular-kitsch art are also an important aspect of his drawing based works. His present series of works are related to the contemporary material culture and human life and the negligence of the local place, culture, history, mythology, memory and identity in present time. Deriving from life experience, Pani wishes to create a new vision by the juxtaposition of the above experience with the rich legacy of diverse visual culture with the vast tradition of Odishan miniature and Pata paintings and dance forms like Gotipua dance and Chhau-dance. The attempt is to create a new phenomenology and reinvention of ‘self’ in a globalized and yet localized world. Pani has several solo shows to his credit, amongst which : “Re – Vision” at Gallery Espace New Delhi and R.L.Fine arts, New York. 2009 / ”Boy Dancer’’- The convergence and continuum, at Gallery Espace, New Delhi. 2007 / “Risk’’-The Double Edge of Society, at Gallery Espace, New Delhi. 2006; stand prominent.
